Sheikh Jamal thru to Fed Cup quarters

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd confirmed their quarterfinal berth in the Bashundhara Group Federation Cup 2022-23 as one of the two top third-placed teams after they played a 2-2 draw with Mohammedan Sporting Club in their last Group A match at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj on Tuesday.

Sheikh Jamal went 0-1 down in the match after Mohammden midfielder Arif Hossain gave his side the lead with a left-footed angular shot in the 28th minute.

However, Sheikh Jamal’s Saint Vincentian forward Cornelius Stewart equalized the margin with a long-range shot from nearer the box in the 44th minute.

Mohammedan again got the lead when another local midfielder Ashraful Haque sent the ball home with a long chip-in shot over the Sheikh Jamal goalkeeper Rasel Mahmud from outside the box in the 71st minute.

However, five minutes later, Gambian forward Sulayman Sillah appeared as a saviour for Sheikh Jamal as he levelled the margin again with a right-footed grounder in the 76th minute.

On the same day, Rahamatganj Muslim Friends Society also confirmed a place in the last eight after they beat Azampur Football Club Uttara by 2-1 goals in the other Group A match at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla.

Rahamatganj MFS got an early blow while AFC Uttara midfielder Rohit Sarkar gave his side a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.

However, the old-Dhaka outfit took command of the game in the second half when Colombian forward Jhoaho Rivelino Hinestroza Valencia and forward Khondoker Ashraful Islam scored one each within a span of three minutes (between 71st to 74th minute) to confirm the victory.

Mohammedan finished the group stage on top with seven points from three games while Rahamatganj ended runners-up with six points.

Sheikh Jamal DC bagged a total of four points and it helped the outfit to secure the top spot among the three third-placed teams in the competition.
