4 Rupganj steel mills fined Tk 5.25 lakh

RUPGANJ: The Department of Environment fined four steel mills in Rupganj in Narayanganj Tk 5.25 lakh for violating of solid waste management rules and environmental pollution air which poses a serious health hazard.

The companies that were fined are Bikrampur Steel Mill Limited, Ambient Steel (BD) Ltd, Ambient Steel (BD) Ltd (Unit-2) and Ambient Steel (BD) Ltd (Unit-3) in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj district.

Department of Environment in Narayanganj Office Deputy Director Muhammad Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the news to the Daily Sun and said the mills were fined on Tuesday after a hearing for polluting the environment.

The mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Kazi Tamzid Ahmed of Narayanganj District Administration conducted the drive in those mills on Tuesday and found evidence of making iron rods by shutting down the ATPs. “At the hearing, of the four steel mills was fined Tk 5.25 lakh,” he added.

As per section 7(4) of 2021 for violation of solid waste management rules, factories are fined by conducting raids under section 18(2) of Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2006. Besides, the owner of 2 under-construction multi-storied buildings called Yeshfi Tower and Central Plaza has been fined Tk 20,000 for keeping construction materials in the open place. Deputy Director Muhammad Abdullah Al Mamun said that such operations of the Department of Environment will continue against polluting factories and projects in Narayanganj.
