NHRC team meets Speaker

A delegation of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) led by its Chairman Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed on Sunday paid a courtesy call on Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at the latter’s office in the capital, reports BSS.

NHRC members Md Selim Reza, Md Aminul Islam, Kongjary Chowdhury, Professor Dr. Biswajit Chandra, Dr Tania Haque and Kawsar Ahmed and its Secretary Narayan Chandra Sarkar were among the delegation.

During the meeting, they discussed matters including progress of establishing human rights in Bangladesh, role of the government in protecting living standard of the people and ongoing development activities.

Dr Shirin Sharmin said human rights have been established in Bangladesh during the incumbent government's tenure.

General people are getting justice and human rights are being protected during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's welfare-oriented government, she said.

The Speaker said Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2010 has been formulated for the protection of women from domestic violence.

The government is determined to protect rights of women and children, she said.

High officials of NHRC and JS Secretariat were present on the occasion.
