EC announces presidential polls schedule today

The Election Commission (EC) will announce the schedule for the country’s 22nd presidential election today, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said.

The CEC came up with the disclosure while talking to reporters after holding a meeting with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at the Parliament Bhaban on Tuesday. 

“We (EC) have decided to sit in a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday). After that meeting, we’ll announce the election schedule for the presidential election,” Habibul Awal said.

The meeting with the Speaker continued for over half an hour. Senior Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat Abdus Salam and EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam were present.

According to the Presidential Election Act, there is a provision for the CEC to meet the Speaker before the presidential polls and a parliamentary sitting must be held for electing new president.

The CEC said there is a provision in the law regarding the holding of presidential election.

“The EC has to meet with the Speaker before announcing the schedule for the presidential polls. We met the Speaker and discussed holding of the election,” he added.     President Abdul Hamid has been serving as head of the state for the two consecutive terms. His second and last term will expire on April 24.

Abdul Hamid was sworn in as the 20th president of the country on April 24, 2013. After the end of this term, he took oath as the president for the second term on the same date in 2018.
