The Election Commission on Sunday announced a draft voter list with the enrollment of 79.83 lakh new voters, an increase of 5.10 percent.

The new voters will be able to cast their votes for the first time in the 12th parliamentary elections.

The number of voters stands at 11,90,61,158, while it was 11,32,87,010 on the last year’s voter list.

"The final voter list will be published on March 2 this year," EC Secretary Jahangir Alam told reporters at EC Secretariat in the capital.

Voters will be able to raise objections over the voter list until February at all upazila elections offices, and a hearing will take place on February 14 in this regard, he said.

Furthermore, anyone who is eligible to vote but has not yet registered may be added to the list at this time.

In the updated draft voter list, there are 6, 03,83,122 male voters, which were 5, 76, 89,529 last year. Besides, 5,86,77,209 female voters were listed this year, compared to 5,55,97,027 last time.

At the same time, 837 transgender voters have been added to the list, which had 454 last time.

On the other hand, the names of 22.09 lakh voters who have died were dropped from the list.

In that account, a total of 57.74 lakh voter names were included in the draft voter list, said the secretary.

He said the total number of voters in the country stands at 11.91 crore after adding 57.74 lakh voters.

In a letter sent by the Election Commission to the field-level officials on December 11 last, everyone was instructed to send the draft list by January 15.

Every year the draft list is published on January 2, but this time it did not happen.

There is a provision to update the voter list from January 2 to March 2, as per the voter list rules.

According to the provision, the final list is published on March 2 after settling the objections to the draft list.

This time, the release of the draft voter list has been delayed, but the schedule for the final list will remain unchanged.

The Election Commission started updating the list on May 20 of last year. The EC enumerators went door-to-door in May and June last year to collect information.

The draft voter list will be published at district and upazila election offices, ward councilors’ offices in city corporations and municipalities, as well as union parishad offices.

This is the last registration process for prospective voters before the 12th parliamentary election.
