A woman gave birth to a baby boy at the Agargaon metro rail station in Dhaka on Thursday.

Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Deputy Project Manager of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), confirmed the news.

"Sonia Rani Roy, along with her husband Sukanta Saha, was travelling to Agargaon from Uttara by metro rail. There, she started feeling labour pains. As the train reached Agargaon, she was taken to the station's first aid centre. Later, she gave birth to a baby at around 9:30 am," Mahfuzur Rahman said.

Members of the Scouts and DMTCL officials took care of the woman, he said.

Later, the mother and the son were sent to a nearby hospital by an Italian-Thai Development Company’s ambulance, he added.

He also mentioned that the mother and the baby did not have any physical complications.

Sukanta Saha, the husband of the wife, said, "My wife was under routine medical checkups throughout her pregnancy. Accordingly, I, along with my wife, left home for a doctor's appointment today (Thursday). But she started to experience labour pain in between the journeys. After reaching Agargaon, she was taken to the First Aid Centre. And we were blessed with a cute baby boy."    The country’s first-ever metro-rail service was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on December 28 last year.

The following day, the city service went into commercial operation, attracting huge passengers.

Since then, people from all over the country have travelled by metro train out of both necessity and curiosity.
