Danger lurks at unsafe level crossings in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI: At least 16 people were lost their lives and many other were critically injured by train crushes in several unguarded level crossing of Saidpur to Chilahati railway route in the district on 1st January to 31st December, 2022.

According to record of Saidpur Government Railway Police office of Nilphamari district, “A lots of lives have been lost by train crushes every year. Even, a total of 16 people were killed by train wheels in several parts of the district in 2022”.

Among them, four female EPZ workers were spot death in a tragic collision between train and a battery run auto Rickshaw at Daroani level crossing area of sadar upazila of the district on 26 January, 2022.

Meanwhile, a total of 33 level crossings from Nilphamari Chilahati to Saidpur railway route among them, maximum level crossings are in unguarded. No any initiative has taken by the related department for protect it till now. Everyday thousands of pedestrians including bicycles, rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, CNG, tractors, pickups, microbuses, minibuses are being passing risking their lives. As a result, these unguarded level crossings are being turn into a death traps day after day due to a lots of lives have been lost every year.

Talking to Daily Sun, Sub-Assistant Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) Saidpur upazila of Nilphamari district Sultan Ali said, “A total of 33 level crossings from Saidpur to Chilahati of Nilphamari district are in authorised. Among them, 12 of level crossings are in protected by the gatemen”.

However, though accidents at unguarded level crossings are claiming lives and damaging property frequently, no measure has yet been taken to make those safe. People of Nilphamari are being highly demanding to protect every level crossings of the district.
