Second Youth Games to begin in January

The first phase of Sheikh Kamal Second Bangladesh Youth Games 2023 will take place on January 2-10 next year across 495 upazilas of the country.

The second phase will be held on January 16-22 across all 64 districts while the final phase will take place between February 26 to March 4 in the capital.

The second edition of the games is named after Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for his tremendous contribution in this arena.

A total of 60,000 athletes, team officials, technical officials and sports organizers are expected to take part in the 24 disciplines of the competition, which will get underway after a four-year break.

The athletes, who were born on or after January 2, 2006, are eligible to take part in the competition.

The total number of events is 198 while athletes will fight for a total number of 1419 medals including 429 gold, 429 silver and 561 bronze medals.

The details of the competition were disclosed during a press conference held at the BOA Dutch Bangla Bank Auditorium in the capital on Wednesday.

“The last time we had 21 disciplines and this year we included three more disciplines – cycling, rugby and gymnastics for the competition,” Bangladesh Olympic Association Vice President Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Mamun said during the press conference.

“Covid-19 was the reason behind the delay of the event. We planned to host the event after Bangladesh Games. We choose mostly SA Games disciplines for Youth Games,” he added.
