Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the commercial operation of the dream Metro Rail through a programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital on December 28.

Sheikh Hasina will be the first person to board the metro rail after buying a ticket herself, said ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, Secretary of Road Transport and Highway Division and Chairman of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).

He said for security reasons, only Prime Minister and VVIPs will board the metro rail on the first day of the inaugural operation. General people will be allowed to travel by metro rail from December 29.

Meanwhile, Managing Director (MD) of DMTCL MAN Siddique said rapid pass and general tickets can be collected from the counters from December 29. Rapid pass will be issued for 10 years. People have to apply online for rapid pass. A day after its inauguration, the metro rail will run for four hours every morning. It will stop only at Pallabi station while running from North Uttara to Agargaon station, he added.

The DMTCL MD said earlier 12 trains have been kept ready for operation of the metro rail and 10 will carry passengers. The remaining two trains will be ready at the depot for operation at any time.

The officers entrusted with the job to operate the two trains will also be made ready. Backup will always be kept in mind so that metro rail passengers do not face any problems, he said.

He said according to international practice, passengers are not fully transported by metro rail on the first day of its launch. 100 per cent passengers will be transported in the next two months.

After the inaugural operation, BRTC will have a depot in Agargaon metro station area for transporting passengers to their destinations. BRTC buses will transport the passengers who got down from the metro train at the station.
