Opposition BNP will hold a massive public rally in Rajshahi city today to press their long-running demand for resignation of the Awami League-led government and holding of the next general election under a non-party caretaker government.

Many leaders and activists of the embattled party have alleged they are facing obstacles to reach the rally venue due to a transport strike.

As part of the divisional programmes, the embattled party will stage a grand rally at historic Madrasa Maidan in the northern city with the Rajshahi district unit BNP president in the chair.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will address the rally as chief guest, while its central and local leaders will be present at the programme.

The programme is meant to protest the hikes in the prices of essential commodities, fuels and fertilisers, and the deaths of five BNP men in firing.

Other demands include dissolution of the current parliament, handover of power to a non-party caretaker government,

resignation of the incumbent Awami League-led government and permanent release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

BNP is determined to make a huge gathering of people at the Rajshahi public rally and has made extensive preparations to that end, according to party sources.

The party has taken the obstacles, including the transport strike called to ‘foil’ the rally, as a challenge.

The party leaders and activists who came from nearby districts also stayed overnight at temporary camps at the Madrasah ground, the venue of the rally.

The leaders and activists who came earlier were staying in the ground while many others stayed at the houses of their relatives and well-wishers and some others in hotels in the city.

There were also arrangements for food in the venue for the party men who arrive ahead of Saturday. BNP central and local leaders were looking after them.

Witnesses said thousands of opposition leaders and activists and supporters arrived at the venue, a day before the party's divisional rally while some arrived on Wednesday and Thursday.

BNP sources said all the residential hotels and its adjacent areas were booked by the party ahead of its public rally to accommodate the party men who joined the rally from distant areas.

A large number of leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies started thronging the rally venue from different districts since Wednesday due to the transport strike.

Due to the transport strikes, BNP leaders, activists and supporters went to the rally venue by different modes of alternative vehicles, including three-wheelers, motorbikes, bi-cycles, trucks, pickups and trains, and even on foot.

The rally is scheduled to be held for Saturday, but the BNP leaders, activists and supporters started arriving early as Rajshahi Divisional Road Transport Owners’ Association threatened to enforce an indefinite strike in all eight districts of Rajshahi division from December 1.

Besides this, owners of three-wheelers also called a strike from Friday morning in Rajshahi.

BNP leaders alleged that police have been blocking the entrance to Rajshahi city since Wednesday night.

BNP earlier held eight big public rallies in Chattogram, Mymensingh, Khulna, Rangpur, Barishal, Faridpur, Sylhet and Cumilla cities. The transport strike was called ahead of all rallies but Chattogram and Cumilla.
