Allow us to hold rally at Nayapaltan

Popular News

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the government to give them permission to hold the party’s divisional public rally in Nayapaltan instead of Suhrawardy Udyan.

"We have already sent a letter to the police commissioner (DMP) a month ago stating that we want to hold a public rally in Nayapaltan. Many rallies were held there without any problems. It is divisional rally, not national level," he said.

The BNP leader came up with the statement while speaking at a protest rally arranged jointly by Dhaka's south and north city units of the BNP in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Wednesday. "We are clearly telling (the government) to change its decision and understand the people’s demand. Take necessary arrangement for holding our rally in Nayapaltan. It is your responsibility," he added.

He alleged that the government has been carrying out "repression" on opposition men for the last month, following the party’s divisional public rallies across the country.

Meanwhile, a delegation of BNP leaders led by its Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu is scheduled to meet IGP (Inspector General of Police) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Thursday afternoon at the police headquarters, BNP sources said.

The four-member delegation will meet the IGP at 1:00 pm to discuss the recent arrests of BNP leaders and activists and the party’s December 10 public rally.
