CHATTOGRAM: Unloading and transportation of imported goods remained suspended due to the strike enforced by the water-transport workers since Sunday early hours.
Bangladesh Naujan Sramik Parishad enforced the countrywide strike from 12:00 am pressing home their 10-point demands including the minimum salary of Tk 20,000 for the workers.
The workers refrained from work during the strike.
Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Md Omar Faruq said offloading of goods from some 22 mother vessels at Outer Anchorage remained suspended due to the strike.
However, loading and offloading of containers at the port jetties were going on as usual, he said.
Noujan Sramik Sangram Parishad Chattgoram Convener Shafiqul Islam said lighter vessels, tankers and passenger launches are within the strike purview. He said that their demands include fixing the minimum salary at Tk 20,000 for the workers, compensation for death at the workplace at Tk 10 lakh for them and landing pass for the workers who go outside Bangladesh.
Shafiqul Islam said the strike will continue until their demands are met.
