Riding on an extra-time goal by forward Rahim Uddin, Dhaka Abahani reached the semifinal of the ongoing 12th Independence Cup 2022 after beating Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by 2-1 goals in a thrilling quarterfinal match at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj on Sunday.

Rahim scored the match-winner in the 99th minute of the game. Earlier, Sheikh Jamal’s defender Sakil Hossain struck a shocking own goal in the 30th minute that helped Abahani to take a 1-0 lead but after half time Sheikh Jamal’s Saint Vincentian forward Cornelius Stewart levelled the margin (1-1) in the 77th minute that threw the match into extra time.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Police Football Club also booked a place in the semifinal defeating Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra by 5-4 goals in the day’s other exciting quarterfinal at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Stadium in Cumilla.

Police’s forward MS Bablu, Venezuelan forward Edward Morillo, Panamanian forward Jose Alexander Hernandez, Kyrgyzs defender Almazbek Malikov and defender Esanur Rahman scored one each in the 16th, 33rd, 81st, 86th and 120th minutes of the game.  Muktijoddha’s Burundian defender Selemani Landry Ndikumana scored a brace in 55th, 70th minutes and Nigerian forward Emmanuel Ikechukwu Uzchukwu added one in the 45th minute while Police’s forward Al Amin netted an own goal in the 90+3rd minute.
