Fortis hold Sk Russel, MSC beat Navy

Two-time Independence Cup champions Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd played a 1-1 draw against newcomers Fortis Football Club Ltd in their opening match of the season’s domestic curtain riser 12th Independence Cup 2022 at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Stadium in Cumilla on Sunday.

Sheikh Russel KC went 0-1 down after Fortis’ FC Brazilian defender Danilo Augusto Chapoval de Azevedo gave his side the lead in the 38th minute.

Sheikh Russel’s Nigerian forward Mfon Sunday Udoh equalized the margin in the 52nd minute but they failed to score further in the game and had to finish the game with one point.

In the day’s other match, Mohammedan Sporting Club defeated Navy Football Team by 2-0 goals at the Bir Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj. Malian forward Souleymane Diabate and local forward Jafar Iqbal scored one goal each in the 84th and 87th minute respectively helping their side bag all three points from the game.

Meanwhile, three-time Bangladesh Premier league champions Bashundhara Kings will begin their Independence Cup campaign against Fakirapool Young Men’s Club in Cumilla today. Chattogram Abahoni Ltd will play against Azampur Football Club Uttara in Gopalganj.
