Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder on Sunday said there is no possibility of famine in the country if people do not stockpile 3-4 times more food.

“In the country, crops are being grown only by sowing seeds. Aman witnessed a bumper production. The country has adequate stock of fertilisers for IRRI and Boro. The government has adequate food stock and import also continues,” he said, adding that for this reason, there is no possibility of famine in the country.

The Food Minister said this while speaking at a workshop titled “Safe food laws and regulations dissemination to mass media workers” at the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority training centre in the city.

“Hunger has been eliminated from the country. Once we were in a food crisis [manga], now we can eat rice. But we have to focus on how much safe food we can eat,” he said.

The Food Minister also inaugurated the E-Health certification to the exporters for their exportable food products.

BFSA member professor Abdul Alim said, “Earlier, the authorities from abroad came to Bangladesh and gave the certificate for exporting food items. Now there will be no need for it. Bangladesh will give international standard certificates.”                 “The whole world will know that safe food is available in Bangladesh. As a result, the export will be accelerated more, “he said.

Speaking as a special guest, Food Secretary Ismiel Hossain put emphasis on building trust in providing health certificates for export of food products. He also expressed the hope that the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority will give proper food safety certification.

From now, the BFSA has been assigned to issue the certificate upon testing samples of export products in its dedicated laboratories.
