Singer Akbar no more

Singer Akbar Ali Gazi, popularly known as Akbar, passed away on Sunday. He breathed his last at the BIRDEM hospital in the capital while undergoing treatment. He was 54.

Akbar’s wife Kanij Fatema confirmed the news to the media.

Earlier on Wednesday, the singer was put on life support following deterioration of his condition. Akbar was suffering from diabetes and kidney problems for the last few years. His right leg was amputated due to health complications on October 16.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina donated Tk 20 lakh for his treatment last year.

Akbar was born in Paikgacha, Khulna. He came to limelight after performing at the popular programme ‘Ityadi’ in 2003, where he rendered the song ‘Ekdin Pakhi Ure Jabe Je Akashe’. His song ‘Tomar Haath Pakhar Batash’ also got popular among the audience. Before his TV appearance, he would pull rickshaw as a means of livelihood.
