Police have arrested three ‘members’ of a gang which has stolen about 400 bicycles in different parts of the capital in the last four years.

A team from Hatirjheel Police Station nabbed the trio — Asif, Mohammad Apon and Hossain Fakir Shakil — with 27 stolen bicycles in Madhubagh on Thursday.

In a press release issued on Saturday, Imran Hossain Molla, assistant commissioner (Media and PR) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said acting on a tip-off that stolen cycles were being sold at Madhubagh, the police team conducted a raid at about 9:30 pm on Thursday and arrested Asif and Apon. The information extracted from the duo led to the arrest of Shakil and recovery of the bicycles from a storehouse in West Rampura.

The police officer said that the arrestees with 10 others stole cycles in the city’s Maghbazar, Rampura, Motijheel, Badda and Mugda areas.

They targeted bicycles of those who entered mosques to offer prayers, restaurants to eat and markets to buy groceries and vegetables in the areas. They could broke locks in a moment, said the officer.

He said Shakil has a bicycle workshop and a storehouse in Madhubagh. He bought stolen cycles from thieves and sold them after repairing and changing different parts. Once in a while, he sent the stolen cycles to a shop in Bangshal to sell.

Police are now hunting for Bangshal shop owner. A case was filed against the three.
