A woman with her two children made a suicide attempt on the premises of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) in the capital on Saturday morning.

They are Shirin Akhter, 35, her daughter Shamima Akhter, 16 and son Jahir Khan, 10.

They attempted to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills and pouring kerosene on their bodies.

They tried to kill themselves in protest against the grabbing of their homestead by Mohammad Hannan, a local leader of Awami League in Narayanganj.

After the rescue, police rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment, confirmed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station Nur Mohammad.

He said that their stomachs were washed at the hospital and that they were undergoing treatment there.

Shirin said that her husband bought a piece of land at Barpa in Sonargaon Upazila about eight years ago. After that, they built a house and began living there.

But local AL leader Hannan was creating pressure on them to leave the house. Hannan also lodged a case against them and intimidated them.

"Hannan got us out of our house two months ago. We cannot enter there," she said.

"My husband is ill. He went missing a few days ago. We could not find him. So, we took the attempt to commit suicide," she said.

The woman said that local elected representatives and administration did not help them.

Earlier on July 4, businessman Gazi Anis, who was the former president of Kushtia District Unit of Chattra League, set himself on fire in front of the JPC.

He succumbed to his injuries at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery the following day.

The businessman committed suicide after failing to get back his dues amounting to Tk 12.6 million from Henolux Company.

On January 27, a youth named Mamun made an attempt to kill himself by pouring kerosene on his body at the Jatiya Press Club as his two wives left him.
