CHATTOGRAM: The workers of Khatunganj, one of the largest wholesale markets of the country, observed strike on Wednesday protesting death of a fellow worker in an attack.

The deceased was identified as Md Masud Majhi, 45, son of Belayet Hossain Bepari of village Char Khalifa in Daulatkhan upazila under Bhola district.

He used to load and unload goods at the market.

Sources said Masud locked in an altercation with a pick-up van driver during his work on Monday.

At one stage, the argument turned violent when the van driver suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed Masud, leaving him injured.

He was whisked off to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) immediately and succumbed to his injuries at the ICU of the hospital on Wednesday morning.

As the news of death of the worker spread, the fellow workers stopped loading and unloading activities at the busy market.

Trading at the market came to a standstill following the protest throughout the day.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station Jahedul Kabir said they held meeting with the workers’ leaders.

The leaders promised to resume works after namaz-e-janaza of Masud on Wednesday evening, claimed the OC.

Earlier on Tuesday, Masud’s son Babul filed a case with the concerned Kotwali Police Station in this connection.
