BERC to decide on bulk tariff hike proposal tomorrow

Bangladesh Energy Regula-tory Commission (BERC) will announce its decision on bulk power tariff tomorrow, the BERC chairman has said on Tuesday.

“We will announce our decision on bulk power tariff on Thursday based on the evaluation of the proposal from Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB),” BERC chairman Abdul Jalil told the

Daily Sun.

“The commission will sit today (Wednesday) to look at the proposal and make a final decision on the tariff adjustment. We will set the tariff at a rational level.”

Different trade bodies have already opposed any power tariff hike as the cost of production has increased significantly due to recent fuel prices hike and fluctuations in dollar rates.

“Appeal exporters may lose their competitiveness in the international market if the regulator increases the power tariff,” Md. Mohiuddin Rubel, director of BGMEA told the Daily Sun.

Meanwhile, the ongoing load-shedding is creating frustration across the country.

A letter from the finance division, signed by Finance Division deputy secretary Md Tawhidul Islam, last month asked the power division for taking the necessary steps for adjusting the power tariff and cut the capacity payment rationally.

It was one of the six conditions of the finance division to release Tk 4,145.88cr subsidy to pay bulk electricity bills for rental, quick rental and Independent Power Producers.
