BHOLA: The Department of Livestock Services in association with the Local Government Division has launched a five-day vaccination campaign from Saturday to prevent rabies, which is a deadly animal disease.

District Livestock Officer Dr Indrajit Kumar Mondal inaugurated the vaccination campaign in Kalibari Mor area of the district town on Friday.

Dr Indrajit said as per guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) this programme has been started to eradicate rabies diseases from the world by 2030.

If a rabies-affected dog bites other animals and humans, the rabies virus enters the body and causes rabies. Dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99 per cent of all rabies transmissions to humans, he added.

The vaccination campaign has started simultaneously in seven upazilas, 69 unions and five municipalities of the district from this morning.
