Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is going to introduce ‘smart car parking’ system for vehicles in the capital in a bid to reduce traffic jam on the roads.

The DNCC has initiated a pilot project of ‘smart car parking’ on certain roads in Gulshan area in order to bring discipline on the streets.

According to the smart parking system, city dwellers will find specific parking through a smartphone app. If he/she wants to park a car in those places, he/she has to pay a certain amount of parking fee.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said smart car parking system is being launched to bring order to cars on the road. All parking will be managed through an app. Drivers and owners can see how many cars are available or how much empty space remains in a parking lot. As a result, one does not have to face much trouble in finding parking. Car parking is managed in such a manner in different countries of the world.

He said smart car parking will be introduced in Gulshan-Banani in the first instance. It will be launched as a pilot project. If this project is successful, then parking system will be implemented in other places in phases.

While visiting Gulshan and Banani areas, this correspondent found that a large number of cars were parked in the commercial areas.

City dwellers said if DNCC implements this initiative, car parking will be stopped here and there. Traffic congestion on the road will also be reduced.

Traffic engineering circle of engineering department of DNCC said the DNCC is going to introduce these parking systems on five roads -- 4, 62, 63, 103 and 109 of Gulshan. After reviewing this project for a period of three months, similar initiatives will be taken for other roads of the city. However, the amount of fee for such parking has not been finalised yet.

However, it has been discussed that private cars will have to pay a fee of Tk 50 for the first hour, Tk 75 for the second hour and Tk 100 for the third hour. However, if anyone wants to use the parking, then a fee of Tk 100 per hour has to be paid.

DNCC Public Relations Officer Mokbul Hossain Shimul said car parking signboards have been installed on five roads in DNCC’s Gulshan area. The road has separate markings for each vehicle in yellow colour.

Local house owners said charging for on-street parking will reduce mismanagement. None can keep a car on the road for a long time even if they want to do such thing.  Besides, police cases and trouble will reduce.

Nayeem Rayhan Khan, executive engineer of DNCC’s Traffic Engineering Circle, said 108 car parking spaces have been arranged in the pilot project. A private organisation has been given the responsibility to manage this smart parking through the app. The project will be inaugurated soon.
