Muktar Hossain started working as a waiter in Baridhara’s Avenue restaurant in 2008. He also worked at the Lake View restaurant in Gulshan later. But now he has his own car and house in the United States where his wife and children live. He owns hundreds of millions of taka.

Muktar made this money operating five bars in five separate restaurants in different areas of the capital and Narayanganj. Detective Branch (DB) on Thursday night conducted raid in Kingfisher Restaurant and Bar in the capital’s Uttara and came to know the details about Muktar.

Muktar fled but DB seized 500 bottles of liquor of different foreign brands and 6,000 beer cans from there. During the raid, 35 people, including the bar manager and waiters, were arrested. A case has been filed against Muktar and his associates.

DB said people from different walks of life, including government officials, lawyers, doctors and other professionals, used to visit these bars every day.

“People from elite class used to visit this bar every day. Among them are men and women of various professions, including high level government officials, lawyers and doctors. Even during the raid, people from                different classes and professions were sitting there drinking without a licence,” said Additional Commissioner (Detective) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Harun-Or-Rashid at a press conference at DMP Media Centre on Friday.

He said they had secret information that young boys and girls were having a DJ party in that building in Uttara. At the same time, a huge quantity of alcohol is being sold there. On receiving information, a raid was conducted there on Thursday night.

According to him, many boys and girls were running here and there on the seventh floor of the building after watching the DB team. Later, the team went inside and found foreign liquor and beer. They found similar scenario on the 5th and 6th floor as well.

“We have seized 500 bottles of liquor of different foreign brands and 6,000 beer cans during the raid. We waited but the bar authorities couldn’t provide us with any legal document and tell us how the liquor was brought to the country,” the additional commissioner said.

Then, they arrested 35 people from the bar. A case has been filed against them with Uttara West Police Station. A remand application will be sent to the court to interrogate the accused, he added.

Referring to the arrested bar manager, the DB chief said Muktar owns some five bars in five separate restaurants in different areas of the capital, including Mirpur, Gulshan and Uttara, and Narayanganj.
