Theatre Art Unit stages ‘Madhab Malanchi’ at Shilpakala

Renowned theatre troupe Theatre Art Unit staged its 36th production titled ‘Madhab Malanchi’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Friday.

The play, based on a story from the collection of Momenshahi Gitika, has been written by Bibhash Chakraborty and directed by Rokeya Rafique Baby.

The play revolves around the love story of Durlabh Raja’s son Madhab and Balaraja’s daughter Malanchi.

Mehmud Siddique played the character of Madhab while Indrani Ghatak played the role of Malanchi in the play. Rakibul Islam Manik, Sajal Chowdhury, Ismail Siraji, Rana Sikdar, Kazi Tanvir, Mahmuda Bhabna, Sujan Rezaul, Dolon Aziz, Hasnat Pradip, Nahid Sultana Lemon and others played different characters in the play.

Before the play, a programme titled ‘SM Solaiman Pranadana and Smarak Baktrita’ was held at 5:15pm, organised by Theatre Art Unit. Noted actor Tariq Anam Khan attended the programme as the chief guest. Dr. Khandakar Tazmir Nur and Professor Shafi Ahmed were the discussants of the memorial lecture.

Sheikh Mohammad Solaiman known as SM Solaiman was a Bangladeshi playwright, director, actor, music composer and singer. He was born in September 29, 1953.

Solaiman was the founder of theatre groups like Padatik, Dhaka Padatik and Theatre Art Unit. He was elected twice as the general secretary of the Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation. He created plays like Ingit, Ei Deshe Ei Beshe, Inspector General, Court Martial and Golapjan.  He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2014 by the Government of Bangladesh.

SM Solaiman died on September 23, 2001.
