Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque on Thursday slammed unscrupulous traders, farm owners and hatchery owners for raising the price of eggs.

If the production cost of each egg is Tk 5-6, the maximum price of eggs should be Tk 8 each, said the minister adding that eggs should not cost Tk 12-13 each.

He made the statements after inaugurating the annual central research review workshop of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute in Gazipur.

The Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Directorate of Agriculture Marketing, and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection should monitor the market strictly, he said.

Razzaque is against importing egg despite the fact that there has been a sharp rise in the price of the low-cost source of protein.

“Many may disagree with me, but I still believe there is no need to import eggs,” he said adding that import of eggs will make them import-dependent.

“If we don’t import, we may suffer a little. We all have to face it together. Eggs should be produced locally. The price of eggs will come down in a few days,” he said.
