Strengthening tobacco control law can reduce the risk of tobacco-related heart diseases of people in the country, said Progga, an anti-tobacco campaigning organisation of the country.

"The policymakers should not allow disinformation campaign of the tobacco industry to interfere in the speedy finalisation of the amendment of the Tobacco Control Act," said ABM Zubair, executive director of the organisation in a written statement on Wednesday following the initiative taken by the health ministry to amend and strengthen the Tobacco Control Law.

Progga issued the statement marking the World Heart Day 2022.  The theme of the day for this year is 'Use Heart For Every Heart'.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular or heart diseases (CVD), which is often caused by tobacco, is the world's number one killer and claims nearly 1.9 million lives per year.

In Bangladesh, nearly 277,000 deaths are caused by CVD, with tobacco use being responsible for 24 percent of these fatal ailments.
