Various programmes are being carried out in the country’s coastal areas to ensure safe water, sanitation and hygiene for the poor and marginal people.

Sources in the local government units said these programmes will help attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS). “As part of the initiative, we have implemented the WASH SDG project in some coastal areas of the country to ensure water, sanitation and hygiene for all,” said Mohammad Zobair Hasan, Deputy Executive Director (DED) of Development Organisation of the Rural Poor (DORP).

Targeting 1,13,320 marginal and under privileged people, the project was implemented in seven unions of Barguna sadar upazila -- Barguna sadar, Dhalua, Naltona, Burirchar, Ailapatakata, Kewrabunia and Baliatoli and two municipalities -- Amtoli and Pathagrghata -- from 2018 to 2022 in two phases.

In the first phase, it included three unions and two municipalities while the rest of the unions were included in the second phase. DORP implemented the WASH SDG project in the areas.

“Now we are carrying out follow-up programmes in the areas,” said Dr Silvana Israt, project coordinator (M&E) of the DORP. She said they have achieved 90 percent success in implementing the programmes. They couldn’t attain hundred percent success due to natural disaster. The programmes include capacity development of different stakeholders, building awareness about safe water, sanitation and hygiene and tracking WASH budget.
