CHATTOGRAM: Chatto-gram Deputy Commissio-ner (DC) Md Mominur Rahman said that a section of people are spreading propaganda against him with a partial and distorted statement, bringing the issue of participating in a munajat.

He made this comment while exchanging views with journalists at his office on Saturday.

Mominur Rahman said it is not the DC's duty to see who prayed in the crowd of thousands of people. It is a public office, and everyone has access to it.

He said September 15 was the last date for submitting nomination papers for the Zilla Parishad election. The office was jam-packed with many activists, supporters, and party leaders.

On the same day, there were scheduled meetings  for the preparation of the harmony rally, the upcoming Durga Puja, and the distribution of cheques to people killed and injured in various accidents at the conference room of the DC, he said.

During the preparatory meeting for the harmony rally, the candidates for the Zilla Parishad election entered the conference room together and hurriedly submitted their nomination papers to the DC, said Mominur.

He also said that a chaotic situation was created in the room due to the crowd. It was decided earlier to pray for the deceased who died in the recent fire at BM Container Depot, a railway crossing accident in Mirsarai and a road accident in Zorarganj on September 14.

One person started offering munajat from the crowd and rushed to submit the nomination paper. The DC said that many people who were present in the conference room took part in the prayer in a scattered manner.

"Amidst the chaos, we failed to bar them from offering munajat. The country's development, communal harmony, and salvation of the souls of those killed in accidents were sought in the munajat. But, nothing was said about the Zilla Parishad election in the prayer," he said.

At the preparatory meeting, the DC sought cooperation from all for communal harmony and to ward off untoward incidents during the Durga Puja. No statement was made seeking votes for any party or to influence the election on that day.

On the other hand, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Chattogram, City and district units staged demonstrations protesting the conspiracies and false allegations against the DC.

They formed a human chain and held a rally in front of Chattogram Press Club on Saturday.

The freedom fighters also handed over a memorandum to the Prime Minister in this connection.

The rally speakers claimed that the DC always took swift action against land grabbers, criminals, hill encroachers, and corrupt officials. He is working with honesty and sincerity for the people and the state.

Those, who failed to take advantage due to the brazen role of the DC, want to remove him from Chattogram, they said.

The DC Mominur is working relentlessly to accelerate the overall development through recovering state properties from the encroachers following directives from the Prime Minister, said the speakers.

The vested group is trying to transfer the DC from Chattogram through falsehood and propaganda, alleged the speakers, adding that the development of Chattogram will be hindered if the DC is removed.

The freedom fighters also termed DC Mominur as their true friend.

They called upon all to come forward to foil all the conspiracies in a bid to save Chattogram and demanded legal action against the conspirators.

Muktijoddha Sangsad City unit Commander Mozaffar Ahmed presided over the programme while Assistant Commander Sadhon Chandra Bishwas of the unit and Assistant Commander AKM Alauddin of the district unit conducted it.

Chattogram City Corporation former Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, Muktijoddha Sangsad district unit Acting Commander AKM Sarwar Kamal Dulu, Chattogram Press Club General Secretary Chowdhury Farid, Freedom Fighters Abul Kashed Chisty, Shahidul Haq Chowdhury, Khorshed Alam and Abdur Razzak also addressed the programme.
