Roads still perilous

At least six people were killed and 45 others injured in several road accidents in five districts on Thursday and Friday, report our staff correspondent and agencies.

In Cox’s Bazar, a mother and her son were killed in a collision between a mini truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.

Two people were also injured.

The accident took place at 1:30 pm in Hoikang Lombabil area of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Fatema Akhter (19), wife of Abul Kalam of Old Pallan neighborhood of Teknaf Municipality and her two-month-old son Md Aswat.

The injured are Rehena and Khorsida Begum of the same area.

Inspector-in-charge of Hoikang Highway Police Outpost Monirul Islam Bhuiyan said that Fatema and her son were going towards Cox's Bazar city in an auto-rickshaw at noon.

At this time, a mini truck coming from behind hit the back of the auto rickshaw when it reached the long area of Hoikang Union in Teknaf.

Five people were injured when the auto-rickshaw overturned.

Locals rescued them and took them to a hospital adjacent to Palongkhali Rohingya camp. At that time, the doctor declared Fatima and her son dead.

The mini truck driver and assistant fled after the accident.

Two cars involved in the accident have been seized.

In Faridpur, a man named Nazrul Islam, 38, was killed in a road accident in Gangavardi area on Faridpur-Khulna highway.

Besides, at least 21 passengers of two buses were injured. The condition of three of them is said to be critical.

The accident happened around 12 noon when an electric pole fell from the crane into the running bus.

Deceased Nazrul is the son of Razzak of Kumarbhog area of Munshiganj’s Lauhjong. However, it was not possible to know the names of the injured persons.

Eyewitnesses said that a high-speed bus of Talukdar Paribahan leaving from Dhaka rammed the reverse JR Paribahan leaving from Meherpur.

In this time, the JR transport       collided with a tree on the side of the road. At that time, Talukdar's vehicle lost control and was hit by a crane lifting an electric pole on the side of the road.

In this, a huge electric pole goes through the front of the bus and goes all the way to the back.

One person in the bus was killed and 15 passengers were injured. Six passengers of the other bus were also injured. The condition of three of them is critical. They were rescued and sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

Two of them have been sent to Dhaka in critical condition. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Faridpur's Karimpur Highway Police Station Kangar Kumar Biswas said that one death has been reported.

In Dhaka, Two people, including a woman, were killed and another was injured in two separate road accidents in the capital in the last 24 hours on Thursday.

Sub-inspector Bachchu Miah, also camp in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp, confirmed the matter to BSS on Friday. The deceased were identified as Jhut Businessman Md Sohel, 38, and maid Mosa. Mariom Akhter, 35.

Both hailed from a village under Islampur thana of Jamalpur district.

The injured person was identified as Jhut businessman Md Salauddin, 40, son of Haji Roshan Ali of Rustampur village under Bandar Thana of Narayanganj district.

Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kawsar Ahmed Bhuiyan said an accident occurred when Sohel and Saluddin were going to Bakshibazar from Palashi Moor riding on a motorcycle at around 2:30 am on Thursday.

A reckless truck coming from the opposite direction hit the motorcycle in the area, leaving the duo critically injured, the SI said.

The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the on-duty doctor declared Sohel dead at around 3 am, he added.

Pillion rider Salahuddin was admitted to the hospital for treatment, he said.

A case has been filed in this connection, the SI added.

Sabujbagh Thana police and DMCH police camp sources said in another accident, a car hit a woman named Mariom while she was crossing the road under the Basabo flyover in city's Sabujbagh area around 10:30 pm on Thursday night, leaving her critically injured.

She was rushed to DMCH, where the duty doctors declared her dead around 12 midnight.

The bodies of the deceased were kept in DMCH morgue for autopsy, said Sub-Inspector Bachchu Miah.

In Rangpur, Helper of a sand-laden truck was killed and its driver injured in a road accident at Hasna Bazar point on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway under Hajirhat Police Station of the city on Friday.

"The helper of the truck was killed on the spot and its driver injured when the truck hit another sand-laden truck from behind around 7:30 am," Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hajirhat Police Station Rajeev Basunia said.

On receiving information, personnel from Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defence Station and police went to the spot, recovered the body and rescued the injured driver and sent him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

“The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain, 25, a resident of Modern Mour area of Rangpur city,” the OC said, adding that injured truck driver Jalal Mian of Rajshahi district is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

A case has been filed in this connection.

Meanwhile, Some 20 passengers were injured when a bus hit a road-divider on Dhaka-Chattogram highway under Mirsarai upazila in Chattogram on Friday early hours.

Sources said the accident occurred around 3:30am after the bus driver lost control over steering in Badamtali Bazar area under the upazila.

The accident left 20 passengers of the bus injured.

Locals and members of Fire Service and Civil Defence department rescued the injured and rushed them to local Upazila Health Complex.

Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Alamgir of Jorarganj Highway Police Station said the bus was carrying the passengers from Barishal to Chattogram.

Police detained the bus from the spot, he added.
