Police arrested five ‘criminals’ for their alleged involvement in robbing a gold trader of Tk 20 lakh in the Dhaka University area on Wednesday.

The arrested are Golam Mostafa Shahin alias Shahin Police, Shahdat Hossain, Sayed Monir Al Mahmud, Rubel Islam and Jakir Hossain.

They were arrested from Uttara and Kalabagn in the capital and Siddhirganj in Narayanganj.

A Prado jeep, Tk 1.10 lakh, a walkie-talkie, a pair of handcuffs, and some other things were seized from them.

Harun-Or-Rashid, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, briefed reporters about this at the DMP media centre on Thursday.

On September 3, a jewellery trader from New Market   was going to his shop from Tanti Bazar. He was carrying Tk 20 lakh at that time. When he reached the DU area on a ride-sharing bike, some criminals forcibly picked him up in their jeep. Later, they threw him off the vehicle at South Keraniganj after robbing him of his money.

During primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they robbed the businessman of his money.

The officer said they were professional criminals involved in robbery and mugging in the city and other parts of the country.
