Bangladesh national women's football team registered a historical 3-0 win over the five-time champions India in their last Group A match of the ongoing sixth SAFF Women's Championship at Dasarath Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal on Tuesday.

Forward Mosammat Sirat Jahan Shopna scored a brace in the 12th and 53rd minutes while forward Krishna Rani Sarkar added one in the 22nd minute for the winners.

This is the first time the women's team beat India as they earlier tasted six defeats and only managed a draw against this neighbouring nation since their first meet in this prestigious regional competition in 2010.

“India are the big team in our South Asian region. It is a biggest achievement for us to beat India in SAFF such an important international competition,”said Krishna in her immediate reaction.

Bangladesh’s biggest disappointment was the final of the 2016 SAFF when they suffered a fatal 1-3 goals defeat to India.

Apart from these encounters, the women in red and green lost four time to India by 0-6 in SAFF 2010 group stage, 0-3 SAFF 2012 group stage, 1-5 by SAFF 2014 group stage and 0-4 by SAFF 2019 semifinal.

Bangladesh also lost to India by 0-7 goals in the 2010 SA Games group stage, by 0-3 in the 2011 Asian Qualifiers of Olympics 2012 and by 1-5 in the 2016 SA Games group stage and 1-7 in the 2018 Asian Qualifiers of Olympics 2020.

The historical win also helped Bangladesh finish as group leaders with nine points while India finished second with six points.

Bangladesh will take on Group B runners-up Bhutan and India will play against Group B champions Nepal in the semifinals, both on Friday at the same venue.
