16 gold bars seized from aircraft at HSIA

Customs officials recovered 16 gold bars weighing around 1.856 kilogrammes at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Sunday night.

The gold bars were recovered from inside the pipes under the two seats of the ‘Arun Alo’ aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Boeing 777 on Sunday night.

According to Dhaka Customs sources, Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG 348 from Dubai landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at about 6:38 am on Sunday.

Customs officials had information that the plane was carrying a shipment of gold. Based on the information, customs officials beefed up security at the entire airport. Then the aircraft was taken to the hangar gate of the airport for search after the passengers had disembarked.

The search was conducted there for more than 12 hours.  

The long search operation ended at 9:40 pm. After the search, 16 gold bars were recovered in abandoned condition from inside the pipes under the two seats of the aircraft. The weight of the recovered gold bar is 1.856 kgs, the market value of which is about Tk 1.40 crore.

A case was filed with the Airport Police Station in this connection.
