Women’s hockey is returning to the field after more than 16 months with the Development Cup Women’s Hockey Tournament, scheduled to get underway at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium in the capital today.

The last time the Bangladesh Hockey Federation hosted a women’s tournament was back in March last year when the Women’s Independence Cup Hockey was held.

Women hockey players – split into four teams BHF Red, BHF Green, BHF Blue and BHF Yellow – will participate in the competition, which will end on September 21.

“Our coaches have selected 64 dedicated hockey players throughout the country for the development cup. The competition will also create employment for these players as Air Force will select some of them to form their women’s team,” BHF General Secretary Mohammad Yousuf told The Daily Sun.

Yousuf also informed that the federation would choose players from this competition to form a team for the Women’s AHF Cup, a qualifier for the Women’s Asia Cup, expected to be held in Kazakhstan in October.

“We've asked permission from the Asian Hockey Federation to participate in the Women's AHF Cup. If they permit us, we will select players among these girls to form a team,” Yousuf added.
