Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Saturday launched

a circular speedboat service on waterways around the capital.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel jointly inaugurated the service, says a press release.

The service, introduced under private arrangements, was launched from the Tongi river port in Gazipur. The service has been opened to the public with five speedboats on two routes, which are Tongi to Kodda and Tongi to Ulukhola. The fares for the routes have been fixed at TK150 and TK20, respectively.

It will take 25 and 19 minutes, respectively, for one-way travel on the routes.

Shipping Secretary Mostafa Kamal and BIWTA Chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq were also present on the occasion.

According to the press release, speedboat services will be introduced on Kodda to Gabtoli and Gabtoli to Sadarghat depending on demand from passengers.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised the development of waterways around Dhaka city before 2018.

The government has taken a project to develop 110 kilometres of Dhaka's four rivers to reduce traffic pressure on roads and support the transportation system of the capital.

BIWTA is constructing nine landing stations along with the river dredging of the circular waterway.
