CHATTOGRAM: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-7) arrested twelve ‘pirates’ in connection with a robbery from the deep sea under Chattogram.

The arrestees were identified as Anwar, the main suspect, boatman Liakat, Monir, engine driver Abul Khayer, Nabir Hossain, Nezamuddin, Humayun, Shahed, Saddam, Atiq, Emran and Amanullah of Banshkhali upazila in the district.

Rab-7 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel MA Yusuf at a press conference on Saturday said the members of the elite force started investigation after the robbery in nine fishing boats at Bay of Bengal on August 27.

On receiving information, the Rab forces conducted a special 48-hour drive at the deep sea from Thursday to Saturday. The 12 pirates were arrested during the drive.

A boat, around 3,000 looted Hilsa fish, fishing net, three one-shooter-guns, a Chinese axe, 16 knives and 70 cell phones were seized from them during the drive, he said.

The officer also said that the arrestees admitted that they looted a total of 16 boats in the deep sea.

The arrestees and seized items were handed over to the Patenga Police Station.
