Lightning strike killed three children as they were picking ‘shapla’ in Dhamaran village of Munshiganj's Tongibari upazila on Saturday.
The ill-fated victims are Ramim, son of Kamal of Sonarang village of Tongibari upazila, Sanjida, daughter of Saiful Molla of the same village, and Rabiul, son of Momin Ali of Dhamaran village.
Locals said that the trio along with another child went to collect shapla on the bank of a water body.
As the lightning hit, four children were fatally injured. Later locals rescued them and took them to Munshiganj General Hospital where doctors declared the trio dead.
SM Ferdous, a doctor at Munshiganj General Hospital, said that three children were brought to the hospital around 2:10 PM. They were all dead, he said.
Sanjida and Ramim, who are cousins, came to visit their grandmother’s house. The two studied at a local madrasa.
Just two days ago, nine farmers were killed and several others wounded in a lightning at Ullapara of Sirajganj.
Lightning strikes are common during the monsoon in Bangladesh. It generally kills several hundred people – mostly farmers working under the open sky – every year.
