A separate unit under Bangladesh Police will be launched soon to ensure security and safety checks at every station of the long-awaited Metro Rail in the capital.
The new unit named ‘Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Police’ or ‘MRT Police’ is now waiting for final approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Concerned sources said that the approval process of the MRT Police unit will be completed in coordination with the launch of the metro rail next December. Accordingly, the proposed structure of the MRT Police Unit may be approved soon.
While asked about the progress of MRT Police unit, Md Jahangir Alam, Additional Secretary (Police and NTMC Wing) of Public Security Division at the Ministry of Home Affairs, said, “We are working on it.”
He also said: “No matter the format or unit, the police will be there. Safety of Metrorail must be ensured.”
An official of the police headquarters said that after the decision to form a separate police unit for Metrorail security, a total of 809 employees and 96 vehicles are proposed.
The manpower includes one DIG and one additional DIG, three superintendents of police, four additional superintendents of police, three assistant superintendents of police, 14 inspectors, 21 sub-inspectors, 74 assistant sub-inspectors, 25 naiks and 639 constables.
DMTCL and police officials said that the special unit of the police will be responsible for the security, discipline and passenger protection of this establishment. If necessary, outposts will be established at every station.
DMTCL has identified land for the construction of a separate specialised MRT Police head office at Pitalganj Depot area of Narayanganj.
The people concerned said that the ensure security and safety management of Metrorail has also come to the fore as it will be launched next December. Because in the meantime, various types of posters have been put on the pillars of the Metrorail and various equipment have been stolen.
Recently, 18 people have been arrested for putting posters on the pillars of Metrorail. City corporation has said that it will conduct a mobile court to ban the posting of posters.
As a state-of-the-art public transport in Dhaka metropolis and surrounding areas, five metro rail systems are being operated through DMTCL.
A total of 104 stations, including 51 aerial and 53 underground stations, will be created in this communication network. This special unit is being formed to ensure its security.
Managing Director (MD) of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) MAN Siddique said work on forming a separate police unit for the management of Metrorail was also in the final stage.
Regarding the progress of Metrorail, the MD said Dhaka’s first Metrorail is being launched in December. Metrorail will run from Uttara to Agargaon in the first phase. Ten sets (6 coaches per set) of trains have been prepared for this. These trains will run from Fajr prayers till 12 midnight.
Police headquarters and DMTCL sources said that initially plans were made to manage the security of Metrorail under the Railway Police.
However, in the project implementation progress meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on September 16, 2019, the Prime Minister ordered the rapid formation of an independent specialised MRT police unit to ensure the safety of the Metrorail.
