48.7kg plastic waste found in two days

Around 48.7 kilograms of single-use plastic waste was found from the different streets of Dhaka city in two days.

The Environment and Social Development Organisation (ESDO) conducted the two-day long Brand Audit as an initiative for measuring the number of different brands that can be found on plastic waste, said a press release of ESDO on Thursday.

The audit started from Dhanmondi Government Boys’ High School and made its way to Bijoy Sharani Road via Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, TNT, Ispahani Islamia Eye Hospital, Tejgaon College and Khamarbari.

About 50 students of Lalmatia Housing Society School and College participated    in the audit and collected single-use plastic wastes from various locations of the areas.

ESDO identified plastic products of around 76 brands including the Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Unilever, Perfetti Van Melle, Mondelez, Bombay Sweets and Co. Ltd, Pran RFL Ltd, Square Foods and Beverage Ltd, Akij Group, Meghna Group of Industries etc.

These products are produced by 6 international and 14 local parent companies, informed ESDO.

ESDO Secretary General Dr Shahriar Hossain, Lalmatia housing Society School and College Principal Akmal Hossain along with some teachers, journalists and ESDO team were present during the audit.
