Where’s Bangladesh’s head coach Russell Domingo? The question was murmured inside the hospitality boxes nine and 10 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur which was occupied by the journalists to witness the match-scenario practice game between Bangladesh Red and Green on Sunday.

Domingo’s absence turned out to be the talking point considering the Tigers are expected to have a cultural change in the shortest format after the board found out that his coaching philosophy does not suit them in T20Is.

BCB opted for Indian Sridharan Sriram to take up charge of their national team in the shortest format and as the board didn’t want to insult Domingo on his face preferred to bracket the new T20I headmaster as a technical consultant, who arrived at the SBNS straight from the airport to meet the charges during the practice game.

In a perfect world in this kind of scenario usually, the current head coach Domingo in this case, would have sat with Sriram to tell the strength and weaknesses of the cricketers. However, that was not the case here as Sriram met with all the members of the coaching panel including Allan Donald to Rangana Herath and others apart from one and only Domingo. The Indian will not have to wait long to meet his South African counterpart in Tests and ODIs, if he eventually accepts it when the team management sits today with BCB boss Nazmul Hassan Papon who will give away responsibilities to the coaching staff members that will mark the beginning of split coaching era in Bangladesh.

The Daily Sun learnt that Nazmul called Domingo to meet him and as a result, he opted not to come into the field and instead went to meet the BCB boss though none of them were ready to disclose any development in public.

Bangladesh all-rounder Mossadek Hossain said on Sunday that they are expecting to have changes in the T20I set-up and it seemed Domingo is a past for them in the shortest format.

“I don’t have any idea regarding this issue (why Domingo is not in the ground) because it’s the board decision and we don’t have any idea regarding it,” Mossadek said when he was asked why Domingo was not around before revealing they are ready to get going under new sets of philosophy that will be tabled upon by Sriram sooner than later.

“We have worked with him for so long and maybe a new setup will obviously arrive. Obviously, it will be difficult to adjust to that and perform but as a professional cricketer I believe everyone will do that,” he said.

“When you work with someone for two-three years obviously it’s normal to miss them. From what I heard in the media, he will probably stay with us in Tests and ODIs. So maybe we will miss him in the T20s but he will be in the other formats,” he added.

The Tigers, preparing for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, split into two teams played their first match scenario warm-up game on Sunday where Afif Hossain-led Green team beat Shakib Al Hasan-led Red team by four wickets.

The match scenario game had witnessed a lot of things that include Mushfiqur Rahim coming at number six that was surprising considering not long ago team management said that they are considering him at the top. Mushfiqur did well making 22 of 17 balls which includes one six and one four and probably his place in the playing XI. Shakib batted twice after being out for 19 in his first go while he also made certain changes like shortening the target to see how his teammates fare when it is achievable.

However, Mustafizur Rahman did not take part in the practice game and he is unlikely to take part in the second game as well due to his ankle injury but team management insisted that they are confident he will be available in Asia Cup.

Mossadek added that Shakib even explained how they should go when they are batting together in the middle of the last four overs.

“Actually when I and Shakib Bhai were batting together, Shakib Bhai told me that it would be enough to hit four sixes in the last four overs. In that scenario, we hit five sixes which is a positive. Shakib Bhai obviously helps and tries to explain the situation regarding the right course of action,” he said.

All these things happened without Domingo around that probably hinted Tigers are beginning their T20I journey with Sridharan Sriram as the main architect.
