Ten persons who were arrested in connection with the girder tragedy in the capital have been put on remand for different terms.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbub Ahmed granted the remand when they were produced before his court on Friday.

The 10 arrestees, including crane operator Md Al Amin and his helper Rakib Hossain, were also accused in a case filed over the deaths of five people in the tragic girder collapse on a car.

Three accused --- Al Amin, Rakib and safety engineer Zulfikar Ali Shah --- were put on four days’ remand while seven others on two-day remand.

The seven accused are China Gezhouba Group Company Procurement Officer Manjurul Islam, Build Trade Engineering Company's Administrative Officer Ruhul Amin Mridha, Marketing Manager Tofazzal Hossain alias Tushar, Four Brothers Guard Service employees Md Rubel and Afroj Mia, IFS CON Bangladesh Limited owner Iftekhar Hossain, and head of operations Ajharul Islam Mithu.

In the remand prayers, the investigation officer said crane helper Rakib Hossain was operating the crane while operator Al Amin was giving instructions from nearby.

The crane that toppled and dropped a girder segment on a car did not have a fitness certificate and the man operating it had no training for the job.

Due to their gross negligence, five people died and several others were injured.

The contractor cannot avoid their responsibilities as they appointed the unskilled crane operators and that is why they need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the incident, the IO added.
