Armed robbers stormed into a jewellery shop in broad daylight on Wednesday, shot its owner and looted gold ornaments in Keraniganj area on the outskirts of the capital.

The daring robbery took place around 2:00pm at Nasiruddin Super Market of Rasulpur Bazar in Abdullahpur.

Bullet-hit shop owner Shapan Mandal, 50, is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Mokhtar Hossain, another businessman who brought Shapan to the hospital, said that some miscreants shot him inside the New Al-Amin Jewellers. They looted gold ornaments from the shop.

Soon, they fled on a motorcycle with the jeweller's gold ornaments. Later, Shapan Mandal was brought to the hospital in a critical condition.

Injured Shapan Mandal said that four people came in front of his shop on two motorcycles. All four entered the shop. Then before he knew it, the miscreants shot him in the right knee. Later, they took gold ornaments from the shop and fled on a motorcycle.

However, he could not immediately know the total amount of gold ornaments and money taken by the miscreants.                  DMCH Police Outpost Assistant In-charge (ASI) Abdul Karim confirmed the incident and said that the injured gold merchant was hit by a bullet above his right knee. He is being treated in the emergency department.

Babul Member, a witness, said six people on two motorcycles came in front of the shop around 1:50pm, exploded a few bombs and created panic and darkness in the area.

Later, four persons got off the motorcycles, entered the shop, shot owner Shapan in the legs and looted gold ornaments. Many people, including him, were around the shop, but no one came forward for fear of weapons.

In just a few minutes, the robbers fled safely with the gold and money in the shop.

Meanwhile, District Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir, Additional Superintendent of Police Shahabuddin Kabir, Dakshin Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shah Zaman rushed to the spot after receiving the news of robbery at the gold shop.

At the beginning of this month, miscreants took away around 150 tolas of gold ornaments from a gold shop in Kalatiabaz of Keraniganj Model Police Station at night.

Apart from this, there are frequent incidents of small-scale robbery in the upazila. Panic has spread in the area due to robbery.
