Two-day festival marking Selim Al Deen’s birth anniversary

A two-day Selim Al Deen festival begins at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) today. Swapnadal theatre troupe has organised the event, marking the 73rd birth anniversary of Natyacharya Selim Al Deen.

The slogan of this year’s festival is ‘Biswa Joye Bangla Nattya Aj Egiye, Oithijjho Rabindranath- Selim Al Deen Dharay’.

Besides staging the plays ‘Helen Keller’, ‘Tringsha Shatabdee’, the festival includes laying wreath on Selim Al Deen’s grave, memorial procession and exhibition of documentary films. 

The monodrama ‘Helen Keller’ will be staged at 7:00pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall  of  BSA today. Written by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by Zahid Repon, the play stars Juana Sobnom. A documentary film on Selim Al Deen will be exhibited before the play.

Swapnadal will stage its anti-war production ‘Tringsha Shatabdi’ tomorrow. Directed by Zahid Repon and written by Badal Sarkar, the play will be staged at 7:00pm at the Experimental Theater of BSA.

Selim Al-Deen was a playwright and theatre artiste of the country. He was the founder chairperson of the Department of Drama and Dramatics at Jahangirnagar University.

In the post-Tagore era, he made significant contribution to Bangla drama. He is also considered as one of the pioneers of street theatre in Bangladesh.

Al-Deen was born on August 18 in 1949 in Shenerkhil village of Sonagazi Upazila of Feni.

He breathed his last on January 14 in 2008 at a hospital in Dhaka.
