Daily dengue cases cross 100 in 24 hours

The country’s dengue situation has worsened as the number of dengue patients admitted to hospitals has been increasing day by day for the last month.

According to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 1,099 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals in the country in the last two weeks.

It said 116 new dengue patients were hospitalised in the last 24 hours till Sunday. However, no deaths were reported during that time.

At present, out of the 116 patients, 70 are admitted to different public and private hospitals in the capital, while the remaining 46 are hospitalised outside Dhaka, the DGHS said.

On the other hand, 1,099 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals and six patients died this month, while 1,571 patients were hospitalised in July. Nine deaths were reported during that time.

The health directorate said some 737 dengue patients were hospitalised in June, 163 in May, 23 in April, 20 in March; 20 in February, and 126 patients in January.

The DGHS data further said a total of 387 dengue patients are now undergoing treatment across the country. Of them, 314 patients are in the hospitals of Dhaka city.

Of the total dengue patients, around 90 percent of patients are admitted to hospitals in the capital's 47 hospitals, while around 30 percent of patients are outside Dhaka.

Health experts predicted that the number of dengue patients would rise this year compared to the previous year due to the discovery of a new type of dengue virus, Den 4, in the country.

They have emphasised public awareness to prevent the deadly disease.
