Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Shakib Al Hasan as T20I skipper until the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup in Australia.

The announcement came after BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon sat in a closed-door meeting with Shakib at his residence on Saturday afternoon.

Shakib, who arrived from the United States a couple of hours back, had to sit with the BCB president to clear

everything related to his sponsorship deal with controversial betting surrogate company Betwinner News.

Shakib, who deleted his Facebook post that he had given to promote Betwinner News before joining the meeting, backed out from the deal after the BCB gave him an ultimatum - either choose the betting company or play for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud, chief selector Minhajul Abedin and selector Habibul Bashar joined the meeting afterwards along with BCB’s cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus and some other board directors.

“Shakib al Hasan is the captain till the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup,” Jalal told reporters after the meeting.

“He admitted that he made a mistake (by signing the deal with Betwinner News) and he said that he won’t make any mistake in future. We are hopeful that he won’t repeat any mistake any further,” he added.

Earlier, Shakib was appointed as stand-in T20 skipper in 2009 -10 and led the side in four matches.

Before being suspended by the ICC for failing to report corrupt approaches, he was Bangladesh’s T20 skipper as the board appointed him following the retirement of Mashrafe Mortaza from the shortest version.

During his second stint which lasted from 2017 to 2019, he led the team on 17 occasions.

Bangladesh won seven matches out of 21 games under his leadership in the T20Is.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh made several changes in their T20I squad for the Asia Cup which was announced on the same day.

Liton Das was ruled out due to his injury while Munim Shahriar, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shoriful Islam could not make a cut in the 17-member squad.

Shakib returned to the side along with Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman, Ebadot Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin.

Surprisingly, the BCB opted to keep Nurul Hasan in the squad, who was earlier ruled out in the middle of the Zimbabwe tour due to injury.

“Nurul had an operation last week and his stitch is expected to be removed on August 21. We will see where he stands and so we are keeping him in the squad,” Minhajul said while announcing the squad.

Minhajul added that he is relieved that everything is sorted out between Shakib and the board that paved the way for their best cricketer of the country to lead the side in the T20 Asia Cup.

“Certainly the availability of the best cricketer is good news and we have discussed the team with him,” said Minhajul, adding that they have included Sabbir Rahman as the team wanted a power-hitting batsman down the order.

Bangladesh squad: Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Anamul Haque Bijoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ebadot Hossain, Parvez Hossain Emon, Nurul Hasan Sohan and Taskin Ahmed.
