Sugarcane growers happy over bumper yield, fair price in Jashore

JASHORE: Sugarcane growers in Jashore district are passing hectic pleasant days as they have started harvesting sugarcane comfortably due to favourable weather, less insect attack and timely necessary inputs.

In Bagharpara upazila of the district, they all are very happy as the production look very good along with fair market prices.

People from different parts of the country, including Dhaka, Khulna, Jashore, Barishal, Bagerhat, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Jhenaidah and Magura are crowding Baghrapara markets to buy sugarcane, well-known for its high quality.

More importantly, traders said, they can transport it to their destinations easily unlike previous times as there is no troublemaker on roads. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Jashore, the farmers in the upazila are harvesting a very good yield this time compared to previous years for selection of high-yielding variety, favourable weather and less insect attack.

Md Monzurul Haque, Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Jashore said this year 150 hectares of land brought under sugarcane cultivation at Bagharpara which was 125 hectares last year.

Sugarcane are grown in large quantity at Shukdebnagar, Bahrampur, Chhaibaria, Nauapara, Khalshi and Indra villages under Dohakula union while a limited quantity is cultivated in Datpur and Karimpur of Jamdia union; Mohiron, Laxmipur, Habulla and Narkelbaria under Dorajhat union, and Raipur unions.

Jamil Hossain, a sugarcane grower of Dohakula village, said, “I’ve cultivated sugarcane on 40 decimals of land spending Tk 60,000. Now I hope it’ll help me earn Tk 1.7 lakh due to its good production.”

Kamal Uddin, another farmer of Shukdebnagar village, said the sugarcane growers were deprived of fair price in the last few years but this time it looks much better.

Md Suzaul Hoque,           Agricultural Engineer of the district, said agriculture officers are regularly visiting fields and providing necessary suggestions to the farmers.

Farmers of the upazila have achieved success in sugarcane cultivation on commercial basis. It has become popular among the farmers of different unions in the upazila due to low cost and high profit.

Farmers said the yield of sugarcane in the upazila has been good this year compared to previous years due to availability of soil and suitable weather for cultivation, selection of good varieties and constant advice from the Department of Agriculture.

Bagharpara Upazila Agriculture officer Md Ruhul Amin told the Daily Sun that the farmers have always been given full-time support including various technical suggestions for bumper sugarcane yield. Hopefully sugarcane cultivation will increase in the future in this upazila.
