Shakib cancels controversial deal with Betwinner News

Ace cricketer Shakib Al Hasan cancelled his controversial deal with Betwinner News on Thursday, hours after Bangladesh Cricket Board gave him an ultimatum to scrap the deal or face the axe.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon confirmed the development to the Daily Sun. He also informed that the southpaw is now ready to do everything that the board wants him to do.

“I just heard that he has given a letter (to the board),” Nazmul said a few hours after he issued an ultimatum to Shakib.

“I haven’t read it as yet and when I will reach home, I will read his letter. But I have learnt that he has agreed to all our terms and conditions. I mean he said that he will do everything that we want him to do,” he added.

Hours before Shakib’s submission of the letter, the BCB president issued a warning to Shakib that he wouldn’t have any relation with Bangladesh cricket if he doesn’t scrap his sponsorship deal with Betwinner News.

“Bangladesh Cricket Board will not have any relation with someone who has any kind of relation with betting and he (Shakib) can’t have any relation with Bangladesh cricket (if he doesn’t scrap his deal with Betwinner News),” Nazmul told reporters following an impromptu meeting with other board directors at his Beximco Office earlier in the day.   “Unless we get a written statement from him….there is nothing to convince and nothing to discuss. We don’t have any doubt that it is a surrogate brand and they are involved in betting, gambling and casino in different names and at different times,” he added.

If Shakib didn’t cancel his deal and answered negatively to the BCB’s letter sent to him, it might put his international career at risk.

As per the existing laws in the country, there are stringent prohibitions on establishments that facilitate gambling.

Allowing gambling businesses to function is in contravention to the law as well as the constitution.

Shakib, who is currently the Test skipper of Bangladesh, was earlier banned by the International Cricket Council in 2019 for failing to report corrupt approaches by a bookie.

“As far as Shakib is concerned, there is no option of second thought here and the BCB stand is clear in this regard,” said Nazmul.

“When I first came to the BCB I said that there is zero tolerance in this regard and the BCB won’t accept it no matter how you explain it.

“So there is no way he can have the deal (with Betwinner). We had to drop players like Ashraful so there is no way he can continue with the deal and now the decision is up to him,” said Nazmul.

“He can’t have any kind of relation (with Betwinner) and have to come out of it totally…Not only his captaincy, his availability in any format of the Bangladesh team is in doubt,” added Nazmul at that time.

“We are very clear with whom we can associate even when we wanted franchises for BPL we mentioned with whom they can make a deal as a sponsor.

“You can say this company is different but they have another company who is involved in betting. Betwinner has news, gambling and betting sites. We have said that he can’t have any relation with such a company,” Nazmul concluded.

Shakib on August 2 announced on his official Facebook page that he made a sponsorship deal with betting site Betwinner’s sister concern Betwinner News and since then it has created several headlines in the last few days.
