The government will introduce staggering of holidays (different days of holidays in different areas) to optimize the supply of electricity and gas to industries.

The ministry of power, energy and mineral resources has decided in this regard after a meeting with business leaders.

“We are working to ensure uninterrupted supply of power and electricity to industries and also placed our ideas to them (businessmen). They have responded positively,” State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid told reporters after the meeting held at Biddut Bhaban on Sunday.

He said the move will help to save 500MW-550MW of electricity.

For example, power and gas supply will remain suspended in Gazipur on Friday and Narayanganj on Thursday.

He said the businessmen were also satisfied by the justification provided by the government on fuel prices. “We assured them of readjusting the fuel tariff once the international market stabilises.”

FBCCI senior vice president Mostafa Azad Chowdhury said the ministry placed an idea for holiday staggering. “We agreed with the government’s idea to introduce this system across the country. We also requested the ministry to continue gas supply to captive power facilities during staggering of holidays.”

BKMEA vice president Fazle Shamim Ahsan said they requested the ministry to keep the dying and spinning mills out of the purview of power and energy cut.

In July 18, the government decided to introduce area-based load shedding of electricity to save at least 1,000MW of electricity.

The government also decided to cut generating electricity from costly diesel fired power plants to save green back at the same day during an inter ministerial meeting at Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, the energy and mineral resources division has proposed area based holiday staggering.

State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid said the holiday staggering will improve electricity supply in pre load shedding level from October next.
