Will Shakib even realise his mistake?

Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is in hot water again. The experienced campaigner seemed to be buying his time to make a roadmap to get away from the latest controversy - his sponsorship deal with Betwinner News.

Shakib on August 2 announced on his official Facebook page that he made a sponsorship deal with betting site Betwinner’s sister concern Betwinner News.

The announcement from Shakib came on the same day when the Bangladesh Cricket Board issued an advertisement for new franchise ownership rights to play in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League where it was stated that any company related to tobacco, alcohol and betting can’t participate in the BPL.

So it didn’t take long for him to get the required attention for inking a deal with Betwinner News though neither he nor his agent is ready to accept it as they feel it had got nothing to do with betting. The news portal also stated that they don’t have a relation with any betting syndicate though in reality that is hard to believe considering many inside the BCB feel that it’s totally a lie.

“Why do they have to say that this news portal is not involved with any betting considering if you are clean then there is no point to announce by barking from the rooftop,” said a BCB official on request of anonymity.

“In fact by stating all these things in the portal, they are promoting betting considering whoever will visit that site will have the first-hand knowledge that betting is going around somewhere close by,” he said.

A cricket analyst possessing huge knowledge regarding betting and gambling in cricket insisted that the prediction table in Betwinner News indicates that readers can be motivated to betting by taking inputs from prediction.

A member of an agency dealing with players told The Daily Sun that there is a possibility of Shakib knowing that he might have to withdraw his name from the contract after it is noticed by the board and thus he had done the dealing until the red flag is put up.

“In such cases, a player takes most part of their deal (monetary) initially because both parties know that there is a chance that he might not be allowed to continue with the advertisement,” said the member of the agency.

Apart from it, Shakib might have to face legal problems considering all kinds of betting activities are illegal in Bangladesh and if he is found to be involved with any betting activities, he might have to face a consequence for it.

The BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon said on August 4 said that they will investigate the matter before talking with Shakib and added that the all-rounder didn’t take any permission for the deal.

Not informing the board clearly violates the BCB’s guideline as it is specified in the player’s contract paper that they will have to inform the board before signing any deal with an organization.

According to BCB officials, this is not the first time Shakib violated the rule of not informing the board regarding his sponsorship deal.

The BCB is unable to announce their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup as they are waiting for a reply from the star all-rounder, who is the front runner to take the captaincy if he can clear him from all sorts of controversy.

The BCB Chief Executive Officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury told The Daily Sun on Sunday that they have spoken with him and tried to make him understand the whole scenario.

“We have already communicated with him (Shakib) regarding his deal and it is something against the spirit of the game,” said Nizamuddin.

“No matter whether you call it a news portal or something like that, eventually everyone understands what it is all about and we have tried to make him understand (the consequences for being involved with such portals),” he said.

“Whether he understands or not will be reflected through his action and we are hoping that he understands it and takes appropriate steps (cancelling the deal with Betwinner News),” he said, adding that Shakib might have been misinformed.

“As far as my understanding goes, he was misinformed (by Betwinner and his agents involved in this deal) about the news portal. Look, we all understand that both Betwinner News and Betwinner betting are not good for the reputation of our board,” he said.

“Apart from that, there is a law in place in our country as far as betting is concerned. We have informed him about everything and hope this will be sorted out soon,” he concluded.
