Stress on sector-based trade exhibitions

Trade exhibitions can play a crucial role in expanding and flourishing different economic sectors of Bangladesh, said FBCCI President Md. Jashim Uddin.

Bangladesh’s top trade body leader was speaking at the first meeting of the FBCCI Standing Committee on International Trade Fair and Foreign Delegation held at the FBCCI office on Wednesday. He joined virtually.

Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president said that international exhibitions played a role in the development of the sectors like plastic, textile, and pharmaceutical.

Small and medium entrepreneurs could find the world's renowned suppliers and buyers under a single umbrella, he said.

Hence, the business leader urged the standing committee to identify potential sectors and to hold international exhibitions on these sectors.

Md. Jashim Uddin further said the several government bodies organise exhibitions and road-shows abroad.

“To make this initiative more effective, they should involve their counterparts,” he suggested.

FBCCI Vice President and Director In-Charge of the Committee Md. Amin Helaly said the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) should incorporate the private sector in organising and participating fairs and exhibitions.

To do so, he called for forming a joint committee of EPB, commerce ministry and private sector.

Committee Chairman Mohammad Nizamuddin Jitu called for the creation of new export market and variation in export basket to keep the economy afloat.

He further emphasised utilizing the experiences gathered from visiting foreign delegations for the development of domestic industry.

Issues related to exporting non-traditional products to South America, Africa and the Pacific countries, inclusion of real exporters in foreign delegations, land allotment from government in port areas for local trade fairs and sectoral exhibitions and exporting various GI products such as jamdani and hilsa fish were also discussed in the meeting.

Among others, FBCCI Vice-President Md. Habib Ullah Dawn, Co-chairmen of the committee Mizbahur Rahman Bhuiyan (Ratan), Liakat Ali Bhuiyan Milan, Md. Nzarul Islam Babul, Golam Sarwar Milon, Md. Alauddin Manik, Dr. Mahbub Hafiz, Md.
