‘Deprived’ CU BCL men on wildcat strike

CHATTOGRAM: ‘Deprived’ activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Chittagong University (CU) unit enforced a sudden strike on the campus on Monday, as they were not offered any post in the full-fledged committee of the student body.

The strike led to a suspension of academic activities including classes and examinations at the university.

The agitating BCL men shut the main gate of the university and staged a demonstration there burning tyres after the names in the 376-member full committee were uploaded on the Facebook page of BCL around 12:15 am.

The demonstrators allegedly abducted the driver of a university-bound train from Pahartali area in the morning causing suspension of the train movement to and from the university. Besides, movement of buses to and from the university was also barred.

At a press briefing on the campus, the protesting students raised their five-point demand and threatened to go on indefinite strike if the BCL did not agree to their demands.

The demands include exclusion of all non-students, married students and leaders loyal to BNP and Jamaat from the committee, expulsion of newly-made joint general secretary Md Ilias, extension of the full committee, inclusion of 50 talented and regular students and maintaining chronology of senior and junior students in the committee.

When asked, BCL CU unit President Rezaul Hoque said those who didn’t receive any posts in the full committee were staging the demonstration.

Action will be taken against them after holding discussion with the central leaders, he said.

CU Proctor Dr Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan said the new examination schedules will be announced later.
